What is a blood sugar meter and why measuring is important

A blood glucose meter is a medical device used to measure blood glucose (sugar) levels. This measurement is invasive : a small prick of the fingertip is used to take a drop of blood, which is analyzed by the meter. Currently, this is the only reliable method for determining accurate blood glucose levels. Measuring blood glucose without a prick is currently neither possible nor reliable.

It's important to distinguish between different measuring devices. An oximeter (blood oxygen meter) measures blood oxygen levels non-invasively , through the skin of your finger. This is a different measurement than blood sugar and therefore cannot be compared to or replaced by a blood sugar measurement.

Why measuring blood sugar is important

Blood glucose levels play a key role in the body's energy metabolism. Both high and low levels can affect how the body functions. Measuring blood sugar provides insight into how the body responds to daily factors such as diet, exercise, and rest.

Regular measurements help identify changes in values and better understand what's happening in the body. This information can be used to support following medical advice and making informed choices, without making medical claims.
